When someone hears the words “you have cancer,” life changes instantly. Even surrounded by love and support, the experience can feel incredibly isolating. There are fears, questions, and emotions that are hard to explain and even harder to carry alone.
In 1975, I was a sophomore in college when my father called me to let me know that my mother was in the hospital and had been diagnosed with lung cancer. I packed a few things and took the 5-hour journey home. When I saw my mother lying in her hospital bed, she looked 10 years older than when I had seen her the prior month. After surgery and chemo, my mother seemingly recovered, only to be diagnosed with metastatic brain cancer a few years later. My father fell into a deep depression from which he never emerged. My sister left graduate school to take care of my parents.
We all could have benefitted from an organization like Cancer Lifeline
That’s why I’m fundraising for Cancer Lifeline. That plus I am so passionate about the organization's mission, that I came out of retirement to serve as the Interim Executive Director of Cancer Lifeline.
For 53 years, Cancer Lifeline has been a steady place to land in the midst of cancer’s uncertainty. We provide licensed counselors who listen without judgment. We offer support groups filled with people who truly understand. We create opportunities for art, movement, and educational classes that offer both practical tools and creative release. We host retreats where connection deepens and healing begins in community.
Every program is offered free of charge so that cost is never a barrier. This level of care is only possible because of people like you who choose to give.
I’m fundraising to help ensure that this support remains accessible to everyone who needs it.
Because of your generosity, someone can sit across from a counselor and exhale for the first time since diagnosis.
Because of you, a support group becomes a circle of understanding faces.
Because of you, creativity opens a door to expression when words feel too hard.
Because of you, retreat offers rest, reflection, and connection in community.
Connection changes everything.
Please join me in supporting Cancer Lifeline today. Your gift, of any amount, helps ensure that no one has to face cancer alone.
